moses in The Electric New Paper...

Was Moses Chan buying a ring for rumoured girlfriend Bernice Liu?
Hunky star says he will get married quietly

HONG KONG TV actor Moses Chan was out shopping for a ring recently. But it wasn't for proposing to his rumoured girlfriend Bernice Liu. Instead, the ring was for a male friend, he said.

Moses was recently spotted by reporters browsing at a silver jewellery shop in Central, Hong Kong. Reports said he bought a HK$8,000 ($1,565) silver ring with floral motifs and that it was a gift for Bernice.

Moses, 36, has been romantically linked with the sexy 28-year-old TVB actress for the past three years since they filmed a travelogue together. But he denied that there was anything special with his purchase.

'I don't know why the report turned out like that. I was just buying a birthday gift for a male friend, it's not for a lady,' he said over the phone from Hong Kong last Wednesday.

'If I had really wanted to buy a wedding ring, I wouldn't shop at a such place (a silverware shop). A wedding ring should be a diamond one, right?'

He clarified that he had bought two items - a dog-tag pendant and a rocker-style ring - for his friend. Moses was speaking to reporters to promote The Dance Of Passion, which premieres over VV Drama (StarHub Ch 55) on 5 Sep at 9pm. He plays a man in love with a widow, (Charmaine Sheh), but the couple is torn apart by their clans, leading him to seek revenge.

The show features the same cast from War And Beauty with Ada Choi, Gigi Lai, Bowie Lam and Charmaine.

The 2004 serial was one of the most successful TVB shows ever made, which also boosted his seven-year career with the station.

He had started off making a Category III film Twenty Something in 1994 and had also acted in movies in the 1990s. But he didn't make much impact or leave any impression until he turned to the small screen.

ELUSIVE YET CHARMING

Moses, hailed an 'aunty killer', has apparently impressed TV viewers with his charming disposition. But it was rather hard to tell over the phone as he was elusive and ambiguous.

He was also evasive about his relationship with Bernice. He has always maintained that they are just 'good friends' but he wouldn't say if the rumours have made it awkward for them.

'Actually it's nothing, work is work,' he said in halting Mandarin.

Would they be afraid to hang out as friends? 'That... I don't know how to reply,' he said with a nervous laugh.

Do they have dinner together? He dodged, but not artfully: 'Err... I don't know what to say too...'

Then he appealed: 'Let's not talk about the rumours, let's talk about other things.'

So we asked him to talk about the kind of women he fancies. Again, he hemmed and hawed before he conceded that he has never really thought about it.

Well, I focus on the feeling. The person I like can be ugly, fat, or bad in some ways, but I will still accept her because I like her.'

What Moses is certain though is that when he is in love, he will keep the relationship under wraps.

He added: 'I will keep mum if I'm dating. But of course, if I'm getting married, there's no choice.

'But I'm a low-profile person and I will get married quietly.'
